A Song of Thanksgiving

“Praise ye the LORD: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely. The LORD doth build up Jerusalem: he gathereth together the outcasts of Israel. He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds. He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names. Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite. The LORD lifteth up the meek: he casteth the wicked down to the ground. Sing unto the LORD with thanksgiving; sing praise upon the harp unto our God: Who covereth the heaven with clouds, who prepareth rain for the earth, who maketh grass to grow upon the mountains.” (Psalm 147:1-8 KJV)

It is a perfect November day for personal reflection and solitude. The sky is overcast, the temperature is cool, giving me pause to muse about the goodness of God at all times in all circumstances. Wife, son, and grandson are chasing the Black Friday temptations. Daughter is working and dad is alone with God at the computer.

Have you ever noticed that everything in creation points toward God? The trees, mountains, grass, and even the tips of waves in the sea. In addition, man’s architecture – – roofs, steeples, signs, etc — all point upward to God.

Consider that the seed the farmer and landscaper plants, even if planted upside down, somehow manages to push its way up breaking the soil in order to point toward God. What a marvel! Not only do the heavens declare God’s glory, but so do the things of the earth.

The majesty of his wisdom makes us want to sing unto the Lord with thanksgiving. It makes us want to grab a microphone and shout, “Wake up! Look at what God is doing!” Let us sing his praises so that everyone around us knows of his great power and mercy.

Dear Father, thank you for using creation to point us to you. Enable us to be better witnesses than the grass and mountain peaks. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
