A New Song

“Sing ye unto Jehovah a new song: for he hath done wondrous things; his right hand and his holy arm hath wrought salvation for him. Jehovah hath made known his salvation: his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the nations. He hath remembered his loving-kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel: all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout aloud unto Jehovah, all the earth; break forth and shout for joy, and sing psalms. Sing psalms unto Jehovah with the harp: with the harp, and the voice of a song; With trumpets and sound of cornet, make a joyful noise before the King, Jehovah. Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein; Let the floods clap their hands; let the mountains sing for joy together, Before Jehovah, for he cometh to judge the earth: he will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.” Psalm 98 (DBY)

Once in a while the grumpy arrives and he drives our desire to sing away. After all, why sing? It takes breath, lots of it. It takes energy, too much. And any way, what have we got to sing about? Yes, you know the routine.

Now consider to whom we sing. Our audience is Jehovah, the Creator of all things. Jehovah, the Judge of all judges. Jehovah, our Savior!

A new song? What shall we sing about? Well, let’s see. We could start with his marvelous works in our lives. His salvation would make a great theme for our new song. We could sing about his righteousness and how he applies it to us. Then, there is the love of a kind, gracious God. And his faithfulness toward his people would make a great verse in our song. Wait, perhaps there is more than one song we could sing.

Who will write the music? Music? We do not need a composer for our new song. It will fly on the wings of praise and worship which is birthed in our hearts. The new song does not need a common tune. That would ruin it. No. The new song is individualistic. It already resides in each of our hearts. We only need to open our hearts and let it out. Simply put our own words of praise to it and the music will follow. It will drive old grumpy away, too.

Dear Father, thank you for your love and kindness to us. We are so grateful for the righteousness you bestow on us through Jesus Christ. We praise you, O God, for your faithful, loyalty to each of us. Enable us to be just as loyal and faithful to you. This I pray in Jesus’ name. AMEN

Let us praise God for the new song he put in our hearts and sing it with gusto,
