A Living Faith

“Now faith is the substance of our hoping, the evidence of our undertaking not of our seeing.” (Hebrews 11:1 my paraphrase)

The following event was related by author Norman Harrison in A Life of Prayer.
Captain Charles Inglis was concerned about this voyage to America. His passenger was the famous George Müller from Bristol, England who had a speaking engagement in Québec. The problem was that the ship had been sailing under a dense fog for the last twenty-four hours and Inglis was certain they wouldn’t make Québec on time.

To make matters worse, Mr. Müller came to Inglis and explained, “Captain, I must be in Québec on Saturday afternoon.” When the Captain explained that it was not possible, Müller replied, “If this ship cannot take me, God will find some other way. I have never broken an engagement for fifty-seven years. Let us go down in the chart room and pray about it.” Their conversation continued as they went to the chart room.
“Mr. Müller cannot you see the dense fog all around us?”
“No, Captain, my eyes are not on the density of fog. They are on the living God who controls every circumstance of my life.” Without another word, Müller knelt and prayed a simple prayer of faith.

As Müller arose, he said to Inglis, “Captain, I have known my Lord for fifty-seven years, and there has never been a day that I have failed to get an audience with him. Open the door and you will see that the fog has gone.” When Captain Inglis opened the chart room door, the fog had indeed lifted and Müller arrived in Québec for his Saturday afternoon engagement.

Dear Father, thank you for your mercy and grace. Empower us with a living faith full of good works. This I pray in Jesus’ name. AMEN

Let us praise God for his plan and live for his purpose,
