Aware of God

“And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, ‘Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.’ And he was afraid, and said, ‘How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.’ ”
Genesis 28:16-17 (KJV)

I begin today by asking myself, Have I been asleep? Am I dreaming? Has sorrow, alienation or loneliness sent me into a spiraling abyss of spiritual sleep? Jacob slept and dreamed. Perhaps, in the realm of dreams, he was truly awake to God since God communicated with him there.

In that dream state, Jacob saw God’s stairway (v. 12). In addition, God spoke to him and gave him promises (v. 14-15). Yet, Jacob realized this wasn’t a dream after all and shook off the sleep. This experience with God changed Jacob’s life. His perspective improved. He learned to be sensitive to God in all places at all times.

Dear Father, thank you for communicating with me. Forgive me for not hearing or not listening. Forgive me for thinking it was only a dream. Change my life O Lord. Deliver me from an erring perspective. Empower me to pay attention to your Spirit in all places and at all times. I pray this in Jesus’ name. AMEN

Let us praise God for his presence and live with awareness,

Pastor Smith
