The Savior’s Birth

“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.”
St. Luke 2:11 (KJV)

When Augustus, the Roman Caesar, decreed that all his empire should be taxed, he had no idea that it would be a part of God’s plan. Cyrenius, the Roman governor, never thought about the plan of God when he implemented Caesar’s decree. As Herod the Great, King in Israel, went about the business of gathering the people to be taxed, he didn’t realize that God was marking the date and time of his Son’s birth. Historical records show that the simultaneous tenure of these three men was only during one short period.

The Innkeeper, in Bethlehem, didn’t have a clue that the Savior of the world was to be born this night in his town. So he turned away the only pregnant woman he had seen all day. Only Mary and Joseph, of Nazareth, knew of God’s plan.

But God, in Heaven, couldn’t keep quiet about his Son’s birth. Like any happy Father, whose child is about to be born, The Heavenly Father wanted to announce it to someone. So, he sent a heavenly messenger to some shepherds on the outskirts of Bethlehem. And he commanded a special star to shine. Then, he caused some eastern wise men to discover the star and understand its meaning.

As we 21st century people rush around preparing gifts and family time, will we recognize what God is doing? Someone wrote, “wise men still seek him.” I want to be a seeker, don’t you?

My wish for you is that you and yours will enjoy a Merry Christmas. Have fun and great fellowship. But don’t forget the Savior, whose birth we celebrate.

Dear Father, thank your for the Savior of the world. May each of us remember that he is the reason for the season. Enable us to serve him for the rest of our lives. In Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN
