After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.” Matthew 3:16-17 (NAU)
Many 21st century believers are infatuated with dreams and visions and mystical events. But, if you question those around you who exhibit real spiritual maturity, you’ll find that they depend upon a clear message from God.
This is not to diminish the reality and power of visions, dreams, and miracles. Rather, it is to point out that believers must not chase after such special phenomena. Indeed, like the Lord, we must obey the Father so that he can pronounce his pleasure upon us too. Note the Lord’s activity.
Immediately after his baptism, Jesus went into the wilderness to fast and communicate with the Father (4:1-2). When his forty days with the Father were ended, the enemy attacked him with vehemence (4:3-11). His time with the Father, however, gave him the spiritual strength and maturity he needed to prevail. Then our Lord went to live in Galilee and preach the kingdom of heaven so that prophecy would be fulfilled (4:12-17). Finally, he began calling others so that he could disciple them for the Father (4:18-25). In all instances, Jesus simply resolved to do the will of the Father who sent him.
Dear Father, thank you for your mercy and grace. We are grateful that you have called us into your kingdom. Thank you for choosing us to be your disciples. Empower us to be as determined to do your will as our Savior was. This I pray in Jesus’ name. AMEN
Let us praise God for his will and live to obey his purpose,
Pastor Smith
