“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.” Galatians 5:22-26 (ESV)
Are you excited about life? Are you committed to God, your spouse, your family, and responsibilities? Do you feel good about yourself, your life, and career? Is this day the Lord has made, a day of opportunity or obstacles? Emotions, attitudes, and physical feelings can sometimes color the answers to these questions.
Yet, when we stop and consider the many ways God has blessed us, we also realize how petty we can be. Many (dare I say most) of our struggles would be relieved if we would crucify the flesh “with its passions and desires.” The Holy Spirit wants to develop a beautiful spiritual fruit garden in our lives.
The Psalmist reminds us to celebrate before the Lord with “a joyful noise” (Psalm 100:1).
What a great opportunity to carefully consider the various blessings that God has give us. We could start by thanking him for the Holy Spirit’s work.
When you have finished worshipping the Lord through expressions of gratitude, express some also to your spouse, your children, your employer, and your co-workers. Who knows the fruit of the Spirit in you might change their lives too.
Dear Father, thank you for your grace and mercy. Thank you for the work of the Holy Spirit in me. Grant to me that he will finish the fruit garden in me. Help me to humbly submit to his gardening. Thank you, O God for my spouse and family. Empower me to be an example to them. In Jesus’ name, I pray. AMEN
Let us praise God with a joyful noise and live in the Spirit,
Pastor Smith
