Then Jesus used this illustration: “A man planted a fig tree in his garden and came again and again to see if there was any fruit on it, but he was always disappointed. Finally, he said to his gardener, ‘I’ve waited three years, and there hasn’t been a single fig! Cut it down. It’s taking up space we can use for something else.’ “The gardener answered, ‘Give it one more chance. Leave it another year, and I’ll give it special attention and plenty of fertilizer. If we get figs next year, fine. If not, you can cut it down.’ “
Luke 13:6-9 (NLT)
Figs. Not my favorite fruit. But this parable concerns me. It is a somewhat disturbing image of a tree placed on probation for not producing fruit. It is a lesson to those who are planted in God’s ‘garden.’
In this illustration, the tree has had ample time to produce fruit but has not done so. The landowner gave orders to cut it down, but the wise gardener saw potential in the tree. He believed that fruit was yet possible and wasn’t ready to give up on the tree. So, he pleads for mercy on behalf of the tree, so that he may give it special attention.
Consider this parable carefully. This fig tree was planted for the benefit of the landowner. He had every right to expect fruit from it. How many times has the Master come to us expecting fruit and been disappointed? Do we need special care? Does our roots need “digging around” and cultivating? Are there, perhaps, some limbs that need pruning? Do we need the special attention of a loving, caretaker? Could we use another chance?
Dear Father, thank you for your mercy and grace. Grant to us the nourishment of your Word and special attention of your Spirit that we may produce much fruit in your kingdom. This I pray in Jesus’ name. AMEN
Let us praise God for his special attention and live to produce fruit,
