Today vs Tomorrow

“But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.” Hebrews 3:13 (ESV)

As Donna walked down the sidewalk to get the morning paper, she noticed Mrs. Jones across the street was working in her flower garden. A various array of colorful plants lay beside her ready to be planted. “It’s awful early to be out in the garden,” she called cheerfully. Laughing, the older woman replied, “The day waits for no one. Gotta git ‘er dunne ‘fore it’s gawn.” Donna laughed at the blue collar humor and walked over to see her friend’s garden.

“When are you going to plant yours?” Mrs. Jones asked.
“We are planning to buy soon and thought we would wait until we get moved into our new place.”
“Oh, I’m going to miss you,” Mrs. Jones said as she inserted a plant in a hole and covered the roots. “Future plans are always good, but you should also live for today. Because the day really doesn’t wait for anyone. It would be a waste to miss today’s blessings.”

As Donna returned home, she could not get this friendly exhortation out of her thoughts. She had been so busy planning for her family’s future that she was failing to fully enjoy the present. Donna decided that she needed to enjoy today and let tomorrow take care of itself. She quickly dressed and drove to Lowe’s garden shop, where she bought several boxes of flowers.

Dear Father, thank you for your grace and mercy. We praise you for this beautiful day. Forgive us our worries about tomorrow. Enable us to confidently place these in your care. Empower us to fully live and enjoy your presence in the present, while it is today. Deliver us from the deception of sin. This I pray in Jesus’ name. AMEN

Let us praise God for his blessings and live to his glory,
