“Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.” 1 Timothy 1:16-17 (NAU)
It was a beautiful day. The sunlight glistened across the shimmering lake. Melissa looked across the water in deep contemplation. She was at a crucial time in her life. She mused, Does my life count for something? When my friends look for examples, do they point to me?
I don’t know of a better subject today than life examples. Hollywood, advertisers, trendsetters and preachers promote it. But an example can’t be painted on or purchased. And when we are looking for a life to follow, we should choose carefully. In addition, we might carefully consider the kind we are living.
This great Apostle understood that God had saved him for one reason. He understood who he was: the chief of sinners (v. 15) and what mercy he had found (v. 16). But he also understood why he had received it. Note his words, “As the chief of sinners, I found mercy for this reason, so that in me, Jesus Christ might demonstrate his perfect patience as an example for those who would believe in him for eternal life.” (italics are mine).
Dear Father, thank you for your mercy and grace. Thank you for demonstrating your love and patience through the beloved Paul. O Lord, empower my life to also serve as your example of love and patience and mercy so that others may believe in you for eternal life. In Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN
Let us praise God for his mercy and live as examples to others,
