Remember

“And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High. I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old. I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings. Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God? Thou art the God that doest wonders: thou hast declared thy strength among the people. Thou hast with thine arm redeemed thy people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph.” Psalm 77:10-15 (KJV)

Asaph, Israel’s songwriter, considered the realities of trouble, pain, and grief. But he refused to dwell on them. When his soul was troubled and he couldn’t find comfort, then he began to comfort himself. He began to talk with himself. He began to challenge his soul. He began to remind himself of God’s great power. The inference behind the reminders is that God is faithful to his people.

He remembers the works of God told by his parents and others. He remembers that God is greater than all others! He remembers that God’s power has been demonstrated among his people. He remembers that God has by his own power redeemed his people.

While we are not immune to the realities of human existence, we must stop wallowing in them. Christians should be the most positive people anywhere, because we have eternal hope. No matter what is happening here in our lives, God is still our God. There is none other greater than he! God is our redeemer and strength! God is our victory! Perhaps we would do well to remind ourselves of these truths regularly.

Dear Father, thank you for your grace and mercy. It is by your love that we are not consumed. Empower us with faith and hope. Enable us to remember your redemption and power. I pray this in Jesus’ name. AMEN

Let us praise God for his redeeming grace and live to his glory,
