2008 The Year of Trust

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.” John 14:1 (NIV)

Who is the best candidate for the U. S. Presidency? What about the interest rate and mortgages? Where will gas prices and inflation stop? Will the weather cause food shortages? Dwindling church attendance and finance. Wars and threats of more war. Civil unrest in many countries. Job security uncertain. Crime and violence increasing even in our own communities.

Well, suffice it to say, “there is much to be concerned about.” If we concentrate on these, we will soon be depressed. But we take courage today because of Jesus Christ our Lord who encouraged us with personal counsel.

First, do not let your hearts be troubled. One may sometimes wonder how to do that. The responsibility is individual. Attitude and thought control are keys. Refuse to focus on the troubling aspects of life. No, this is neither ignorance nor naiveté. Christians do not deny realities. Christians simply pray about troubles, entrusting them to God’s keeping in faith, and refuse to allow them to dominate our lives. Christians read the Bible allowing God’s word to increase our faith. Christians gather regularly with other believers encouraging one another in the Lord. Troubles really do vanish in the presence of the Lord!

Second, Jesus encouraged us to trust in God and himself. Is he who he says he is? Again this is individual responsibility. One must decide for oneself. Not something tradition or habit can determine. Church attendance or membership will not do it. This is up close and personal. Is he God the Savior or not? If yes, by faith, then he will do what he said he would do. If yes, by faith, then we can trust in him for every situation and need. Truly, nothing is impossible for God!

Dear Father, thank you for encouraging us through Christ. Fortify us with faith and trust. Strengthen us with your word. Lead us by your Spirit. This I pray in Jesus’ name. AMEN

Let us praise God for his concern and trust his will,
