A Lover’s Talk

“My lover is to me a sachet of myrrh resting between my breasts. My lover is to me a cluster of henna blossoms from the vineyards of En Gedi. How beautiful you are, my darling! Oh, how beautiful! Your eyes are doves. How handsome you are, my lover! Oh, how charming! And our bed is verdant. The beams of our house are cedars; our rafters are firs.” Song of Solomon 1:13-17 (NIV)

Today is the day for remembering love. It is a time for fantasizing about the joys of our relationships. How wonderful our lover is! Appreciation begins in the thoughts and imagination. These are private thoughts to be shared only with the one God has given us as a life partner.

May I help you remember? She smells so good! She is as beautiful as a cluster of henna blossoms in the garden. If you can not think of an appropriate description, then simply tell her, ‘You are so beautiful, my darling. Oh, so beautiful. You’ve got beautiful eyes. That smile stirs me when you look at me.’

And for the ladies, tell him: ‘Oh, darling, how handsome you are! You are a charming prince. You are strong and I feel safe in your arms. You are a wonderful lover.’

(Read the passage again). This is the talk of lovers. Solomon was very descriptive but he was describing Israel’s love for God. It is intimate. It is exciting. It is emotional. It is passionate. It will make you blush. But most of all, it builds a strong house. It is solid and safe.

Dear Father, thank you for the love you so graciously poured out on us. Thank you for loving us so passionately. Empower us to return your love with just as much passion. This I pray in Jesus’ name. AMEN

Be encouraged today in the love of God,
