“If the LORD delights in a man’s way, he makes his steps firm; though he stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.” Psalm 37:23-24 (NIV)
Jesus gave us signs for gauging a preacher (Matthew 7:15-23). It is not only preachers that are known by their fruits. Each of us produces an outward evidence of our inward being. No matter how we try to hide, some where, some time, some event will cause the real person to appear for all to see. It is the principle of fruit trees. A pecan tree will only produce pecans. An apple tree will only produce apples. False teachers will only teach error, misinterpretations, and heresies.
A fruit farmer delights in his trees that bear good fruit (i.e. the sort of fruit he desires). Those trees that do not bear good fruit are cut down and burned. Those trees that produce good fruit are pruned, protected, and promoted.
As Bill thought on these things, he decided that he wanted to be like “a tree firmly planted by streams of water” (Psalm 1:3). He decided that he wanted the Lord to delight in him and his ways. Bill knew that if his life was going to be solid, it would require the resurrecting power of Christ. He decided to trust Christ to keep him from falling when he stumbled. And he relied upon God’s promise to support him with his strength. Bill decided to be a good tree, producing good fruit.
Dear Father, thank you for your grace and mercy. Grant that we may determine to be a good tree in your garden. Empower us with the faith and fortitude to trust you to make our steps firm. In the name of Jesus I pray. AMEN
Be encouraged today in the strength of God’s hand,
