“We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life. Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us.” 2 Corinthians 1:8-10 (NIV)
Paul writes of his personal struggle with disappointments, despairing circumstances, discouragement, depression, and death while ministering for Christ in Asia. He was human just like us, yet he continued firm in his faith. He refused to quit or give up.
The Indianapolis Colts were in a slump. They were on the verge of losing the opportunity to play in the Super Bowl. Coach Tony Dungy, whose 18-year old son had recently died, rallied his team by explaining the difference between disappointment and discouragement. “We’re disappointed by things that happen to us, but we can’t let disappointment deteriorate into discouragement, and we can’t let discouragement become depression.”
In Acts 23, Jesus comes and encourages Paul in his gloom and doom. He promises Paul that his current circumstances are not the end of his ministry. There is more work to do for Christ elsewhere. Isn’t that just like our Lord and Savior? When you absolutely have to have him at your side by the next breath, Jesus comes and stands by you.
Let the poet’s words strengthen us: “Just when I need him, Jesus is near, Just when I falter, just when I fear; Ready to help me, ready to cheer, Just when I need Him most.”
Dear Father, thank for your encouraging presence. Empower us with renewed courage and confidence. In Jesus’ name. AMEN
Be encouraged today in the presence of the Lord,
