“When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted.” Psalm 138:3 (NIV)
“I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13 (NIV)
We Christians have used the New Testament passage above so cavalierly that it has become a post-modern cliché. And certainly Paul’s attitude expressed in this sentence should be our constant thought, attitude, and motivation. Yet, there is more to consider.
In the words of hymnist J. B. Coats, Where Could I Go? When I need comfort or care of any kind, Christ is my strength and comfort. When I am facing strong trials and temptations, Christ is my strong and mighty refuge. When I need a word from heaven, Christ is my manna. When I am facing illness or death’s chilly hand, Christ is my resurrection. Others may seek strength for their lives in all sorts of places, but for me there is no place to go “but to the Lord.”
Note that the great Apostle didn’t write stilted words of philosophic gibberish. He brought the issues up close and personal. The Psalmist also gives the personal touch. The issue is not if I will call on the Lord, it is when I call upon him. So, what about the ups and downs of life in the passing lane? The Psalmist provides a good answer. No matter what, when, or where a need arises in our lives, we can call on the Lord for strength. The Lord will make us bold and stouthearted! He will give us strength for our personal journeys.
Consider the following prayer by Samuel Johnson, an 18th century poet.
For Divine Strength
Father, in thy mysterious presence kneeling,
Fain would our souls feel all thy kindling love;
For we are weak and need some deep revealing
Of trust, and strength, and calmness from above.
Lord, we have wandered far through doubt and sorrow,
And thou hast made each step an onward one;
And we will ever trust each unknown morrow—
Thou wilt sustain us till its work is done.
In the heart’s depth a peace serene and holy
Abides; and when pain seems to have its will,
Or we despair, O may that peace rise slowly
Stronger than agony, and we be still!
Dear Father, thank you for giving us strength in our journeys. May we always call on you for help in every situation! I call on you in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be encouraged today in the strength God gives,
