God’s Listening Servant

The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” And the LORD said to Samuel: “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears of it tingle.” 1 Samuel 3:10-11 (NIV)

True to her vow, Samuel’s mother had given him to Eli the Priest to be trained in God’s service. Literally, he grew up in church. And for several years, God had rarely spoken to Israel or given direction. Samuel didn’t know about listening for God’s voice, because no one was listening for God to speak.

When we do not want direction, it is easier to ignore the one who gives it. But when God is ready to give His message, He will call and speak to the one who will hear Him and listen to Him.

It is not surprising that God called 12 year old Samuel in the quiet of the night. Samuel was relaxed and trying to rest. His hearing was not distracted by the sounds of daily life and responsibilities. Three times the boy was kept from nodding off by someone calling his name. Naturally, he thought it was Eli calling him. After Samuel came to Eli the third time, the old Priest concluded that God was calling the boy and instructed him to respond.

Just like the other three times, God came and stood near Samuel as He called the boy’s name. That time Samuel replied, “Speak Lord for I am your servant and I am listening.” Then God told Samuel that He was about to do something that would disturb all of Israel. God’s promised judgment would come upon the household of Eli, and it would not be diverted by atoning sacrifices or offerings.

When we listen to God, sometimes He will speak encouraging words; sometimes disturbing words, but always words of direction and guidance. No matter the tenor of His words, it is better to hear His voice than to hear His silence.

Dear Father, thank you for speaking to us through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Empower us with attentive ears to clearly hear your voice. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN

Be encouraged today as God’s listening servant,
