Simple But Peaceful

“Look,” says the Teacher, “this is what I have discovered: “Adding one thing to another to discover the scheme of things — while I was still searching but not finding — I found one upright man among a thousand, but not one upright woman among them all. This only have I found: God made mankind upright, but men have gone in search of many schemes.” Ecclesiastes 7:27-29 (NIV)

With infinite wisdom, the Creator made us to lead simple, uncomplicated lives. We, on the other hand, “have devised many schemes.” Our schemes are complicated. The theory of this . . . the theory of that. Here a philosophy . . . there a philosophy . . . philosophical schemes everywhere.

Is it any wonder that stress is the silent killer? Who sets and drives our goals? Why are we restless and discontented? Why are we dissatisfied with who we are and what we have? Pointed questions, I know but simple ones.

What about straightforward, balanced decisions? What about simple needs? When is enough the right response? Why can’t we simply accept our weaknesses and trust God to be our strength? The maddening pace of our complicated lives only leaves us exhausted, irritable, and out of breath. The calm serenity of a simple life, however, leaves us contented, fulfilled, and joyfully energized.

Perhaps it is time to examine our lives and rid ourselves of the confusing complications. Remember, “God is not the author of confusion, but of peace . . .” 1 Corinthians 14:33 (KJV). Since our God is the author of peace, why don’t we have more of it? Surely, we want more peace.

Dear Father, Thank you for the boldness to ask for grace and help. We confess our need for a more simplified life and ministry. O Lord, help us to know the difference between the significant and the insignificant. Empower us to order our lives in simplicity and contentment. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN

Be encouraged today in simplicity and peace,
