And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” (Genesis 3:8-9 ESV)
There in the Eden paradise, God reveals the two major truths that he is a person as well as majesty. Not only has he given personal deliberation and thought to the creative activities (Gen. 1:26), he actually relaxes with Adam and Eve at a comfortable time of the day.
Several other Genesis passages also express the personal traits of the Creator. We see his majesty in the creative acts themselves and we should note that God is not some sort of cosmic energy or impersonal and indifferent principle. Rather, God is the all-wise and Eternal One who has a voice and can walk with us in the cool of our days.
He is the living God who thinks, feels, and hurts when we hide from him. He approves our obedience and disapproves our disobedience. Despite our faults and failures, He is always interested in our lives. If we will listen carefully, we will hear him calling our name. He will ask us questions about our lives. He will give us opportunity to confess our sins and repent. He will intercede for us to the Father.
Dear Father, thank you for your personal interest in our lives. Draw us nearer to you and increase our love for you. Empower us to live our lives so that you never have to ask where we are. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN
