The Value of God’s Thoughts

“How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you.” (Psalm 139:17-18 NIV)

At first, God’s voice wasn’t precious to Gerald. He wasn’t even aware of the sound until it jarred him awake. Like young Samuel (1 Samuel 3), he didn’t even know God had a voice. The quiet, peaceful tones usually just bounced off his subconscious unheard. Gerald, of course didn’t have a doctrine or theory about God’s voice. He just never had thought about it. He prayed regularly but didn’t recognize any response . . . didn’t receive anything as special.

Consider that God’s communication with us is precious . . . valuable. It is also private. It isn’t for show-and-tell. This intimate relationship between a believer and God is a marvelous one, but usually rather quiet in contrast to the more spectacular experiences some claim.

The Psalmist considered the sum of God’s thoughts to be more valuable than everything else. What does God think about us and our lives? Wouldn’t that be something valuable to you and me? Perhaps we might want to listen a little more intently the next time he speaks.

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth” (Psalm 46:10 NIV).

Dear Father, thank you for your valuable input into our lives. Enable us to hear your voice and empower us to consider your thoughts as precious pearls. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN

Be encouraged today as you listen to God,
