“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him” — but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.” (1Corinthians 2:9-13 NIV)
To most of us, it is quite clear that “no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.” Yet, that fact must not deter believers from seeking more of God. Rather, we should be encouraged by this knowledge.
First, God did not give the world’s spirit to those who believe in him. Second, God gave us his Spirit . . . the Spirit of Truth. And third, God gave us his Spirit for a reason: so that we may understand the blessings from God.
The fact that God would freely give us anything is enough to make believers shout his glory! But he goes beyond that and gives us his Spirit so that “we may understand what God has freely given us.” That is quite different from the world’s spirit of lying, cheating, subterfuge, and deception.
God not only gives freely, He wants his people to know and understand what He has given to them. He wants us to have his mental attitude — his mind — so He gives us his Spirit to ensure it.
Dear Father, thank you for your Spirit and free gifts. Enable us to truly recognize and know every good gift from your vast storehouse. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be encouraged today in God’s spiritual training,
