“Until the time came to fulfill his word, the LORD tested Joseph’s character.” Psalm 105:19 (NLT)
When we think about Joseph’s life struggles, we might want to tell the Lord, “Please, don’t test my character.”
Consider the series of Joseph’s character-building tests. His brothers hated him and sold him into slavery. According to Genesis 39:7 & 10, he was constantly tempted by blatant seductions from his master’s beautiful wife. And when she became convinced that she could not seduce him, she accused him of trying to seduce her (vss. 12-19). With no witnesses to defend him, Joseph was sent to prison.
After three or more years in prison, Joseph was brought before the Pharaoh to interpret a dream. As a result of his interpretations, Joseph was lifted up from prison to prominence — second only to the Pharaoh. This is the part of the story that we like. Yet, it did not occur until Joseph’s character was sufficiently tested to be qualified for achieving God’s purpose.
Though it may be hard for us to understand, Joseph explained why it all happened. “God has sent me here to keep you and your families alive so that you will become a great nation. Yes, it was God who sent me here, not you!” (Genesis 45:7-8 (NLT)
The wisdom of God may seem foolish to us from time to time. Remember, however, that God’s foolishness is wiser than our wisdom (1 Cor. 1:25). It will achieve two important purposes in our lives. First, it will ensure our personal, spiritual growth. Second, it will ensure that we complete the ministry he has given us to do in the midst of his people.
Dear Father, thank you for your character tests. Enable us to persevere successfully through all the tests. Empower us to faithfully achieve your purposes. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be encouraged today in the tests of your character,
