“His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.” 2 Peter 1:3-4 (ESV)
The parents supply everything that a child needs to live and grow. They provide everything within their power. They may not be financially able to provide the child with a life of luxury, but they provide all the essentials that pertain to living and growing. At the cellular level, all the essential biological elements are there to enable the child to grow into a mature, productive adult.
In like manner, when we believe in Christ as Savior and Lord, the Holy Spirit births “all things that pertain to life and godliness” in us. All that is needed to help us grow and mature as children of God has been provided in and through the knowledge of Christ, “who called us” and “granted to us his precious and very great promises.”
Note our text: the Apostle Peter assumes that “through the knowledge of him” we will believe in him and thereby “escape from the corruption” of the “sinful desire” of this world. And not only do we escape eternal damnation, but we also share His holiness.
Dear Father, thank you for letting us know you and your precious promises. Enable us to grow and mature in Christ. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be encouraged today by what God has provided,
