“Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD; O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared. I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning. O Israel, put your hope in the LORD, for with the LORD is unfailing love and with him is full redemption. He himself will redeem Israel from all their sins.” (Psalm 130:1-8 NIV)
In his Treasury of David, C.H. Spurgeon wrote: “The depths usually silence all they engulf, but they could not close the mouth of this servant of the Lord; on the contrary, it was in the abyss itself that he cried unto Jehovah.”
David refused to allow his circumstances to overwhelm him and stop his communication with God. Rather, as those circumstances sunk ever lower, he raised his voice to the Almighty with pleas for help. He knew that no matter what caused the circumstances, God was still a merciful, forgiving God.
David waited in hope, while sending prayer heavenward. Below the floods of despair — above the roar of the storm — David’s faith rose to God calling for God’s attention. No way was he going to submit to the circumstances. No way was he going to stop praying. He called and God heard!
It doesn’t matter where we pray. Real prayer develops out of real circumstances . . . everyday life. The best praying occurs out of the worst circumstances. When the circumstances are deep and overwhelming, then prayer becomes strong, fervent, and powerful. Earnest communication with God develops from real trials and troubles. The diamond of prayer is discovered in the depths of darkness.
Dear Father, thank you for this great communication tool of prayer. Grant that we may use it everyday in all circumstances at all times and in all places. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be encouraged today as you talk to God about your circumstances,
