Confidence

Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” Then I said, “Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth.” But the LORD said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a youth’; for to all to whom I send you, you shall go, and whatever I command you, you shall speak. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the LORD.” (Jer. 1:4-8 ESV)

This is one of the greatest narratives in Scripture. It is one of Christianity’s most favored passages. We like the fact that we were in God’s mind before He sat down at his drawing board . . . before our parents ever came together. God already knew who we would become and what we would do with our lives.

God’s statement here is more about his omniscience than about who we are. We are no surprise to God. Our personality, our gifting, our desires, and everything that is involved in who we are as individuals — He already knew before we were ever conceived!

We can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; . . .” (Heb. 13:6 ESV). Yet, like Jeremiah, we start making excuses as though God is making a mistake when He calls us to his purpose. It is amazing! We can tackle anything until God asks us to go for him. When God calls, our fears overcome our confidence, our self-esteem cowers and perceived obstacles explode into insurmountable impossibilities.

On the other hand, whatever God is calling us to do, we can confidently expect that He is with us to deliver us. So, we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not fear.” Since He walks with us and talks with us, we confidently enjoy his protection and counsel.

Dear Father, thank you for asking us to represent you. Grant us the confidence of your presence that without fear we may overcome every obstacle. In the name of Jesus I pray. AMEN
