A Calm Refuge

“Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD. But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.” (Proverbs 8:34-36 KJV)

How often we rush through our days, perhaps with children in tow, without quietly preparing ourselves beforehand. From the time we awaken our thoughts, like tidal-waves, surge toward the next thing on our daily to-do-list.

Consider what we do . . . work, school, music lesson, exercise & weight-loss class, Bible studies, other family activities, and the list grows everyday. Of course, let’s not forget our favorite TV shows, sports activities, and phone conversations with family and friends. It would seem wisdom that since the activities of our lives are so important, a quiet reflection with the Giver of Life should be the first priority of our day.

It is a dirty trick — a deception — that is played on us. Humans have fallen victim to the constant rush of personal agendas, commonly called “the urgency of the moment.” We have a real problem sitting quietly and tuning in to our surroundings. Why do we work so hard to entertain ourselves or otherwise keep ourselves occupied?

We get so rushed in our busy schedules that we become the controlled rather than being in control. Often, we are so busy that we fail to hear God’s quiet, calm voice. It is no doubt that He speaks to us, but our rushing about is so loud that we do not hear him. (Read today’s Scripture again carefully.)

Is it any surprise that we think our lives are lifeless? If we will listen for his voice, He will say something significant. If we will watch at his gates, He will show us something truly beautiful. If we will wait at his door, He will give us truly great blessings.

Remember, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1 KJV). But do not forget that his refuge is activated by his command to “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10 KJV).

Dear Father, thank your for your calm refuge. Grant to us the spiritual fortitude to be quiet and reflect in your presence. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN

Be encouraged today in the calm refuge of God’s presence,
