“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” (Romans 8:26-27 KJV)
Several years ago, I was privileged and blessed to shepherd a single parent with a child whose disabilities rendered him unable to verbally communicate. Terry is the most loving person I have ever met.
He played only gospel music on his player — over and over continuously — sometimes to the extent of driving his mom to tears. Like any music, when you hear the same song repeatedly for about 1000 times in a day, it gets quite old very quick. But Terry enjoyed it.
When he came to each worship service, Terry would hug every person there, and would also greet any late comers. His mom was embarrassed, afraid that Terry would bother people or disrupt the service, but I assured her his loving behavior was fine.
After one particularly challenging sermon, I invited everyone to come forward and pray. Terry decided that he would kneel by the pastor. I confess that I peeked at him once or twice. His hands were tightly clasped, his eyes shut, and his mouth working soundlessly in communication that no one but God could understand.
Although I couldn’t comprehend Terry’s prayer, I am confident that God clearly heard every word. And content that he had talked with God, Terry hugged me and returned to his seat with everyone else. What did Terry communicate to God? Only God knows, and that is all that matters.
Dear Father, thank you for understanding even when we do not know how we should pray. Empower us to share our feelings with the One who searches our hearts and knows our needs. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be courageous today in your prayers,
