“Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death– even death on a cross.” Philippians 2:5-8 (NRSV)
Isn’t it interesting that we worry more about finance, attendance, reputation, position et cetera than we do about our character. What a waste of energy! Now, we should be concerned about those issues, because they affect our lives and family and careers. Yet, who we are (the truly important stuff) will usually direct the other. And it is truly a waste of our time and energy to worry about the lesser if the greater is not correct.
Jesus, our example, was more concerned about who he was than what others thought of him. This is not an either or issue. Rather, both reputation and character are important. John Gough puts it in a proper perspective: “Reputation is for time; Character is for eternity.”
If we will focus on our character, then all our others issues will be affected and align themselves accordingly. If we wouldn’t regard prominence and position as our personal right. If we would empty ourselves of ourselves and be servants. If we would humble ourselves and be obedient even unto a shameful death. If . . . its our personal issue.
Dear Father, thank you for the example of our Lord’s attitude. Grant to us the same attitude and spirit. Empower us to exhibit such spirit and attitude to those around us. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be courageous today in your spirit and attitude,
