“Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes. With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth. I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches. I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.” (Psalm 119:9-16 KJV)
Cicero Peek got out of bed and picked up his Bible to begin his day. After his devotions, he went into the shower, laying his Bible beside the sink. At the breakfast table, his Bible lay beside his plate as he ate. When he went out and about in the city, his Bible accompanied him. If he stopped to rest in the shade, he read a passage. If someone asked him a question, he opened the Bible to give an answer. He was a godly man.
From the time he awoke until he went to sleep, Cicero occupied his mind with thinking and meditating on Scripture. As he showered, ate, and was otherwise occupied, he talked to God about his devotional passage. Throughout the day, Cicero continued to meditate on the Scriptures and what God said about various issues. He exhibited wisdom every time he spoke on any subject or responded to anyone’s question.
Cicero Peek was a real preacher and pastor of the ‘50s & ‘ 60s, in Gadsden, Alabama. I am certain, if Pastor Peek was alive today, he would reject any idea that he was perfect. The only faults any of us could see were: “he carries that Bible everywhere he goes” and “he won’t talk about anything but God.” Oh, there was one other thing. “He practices what he preaches.” It is no wonder to me that the whole community thought he was a godly man who seemed to be as wise as Solomon.
Dear Father, thank you for the wisdom of your Word. Grant to us the hunger and thirst for your Word. Empower us to meditate on it day and night. Enable us to understand it correctly. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be courageous today and delight yourself in God’s Word,
