“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me–put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” (Philippians 4:8-9 NIV)
Finally. Such a definitive time. It is normally used after several unsuccessful attempts to achieve something. Finally. The last thing that follows a long series of others. Finally. It is also the last word in a series of thoughts.
The Apostle Paul comes to the end of his letter and emphasizes how the saints of Philippi are to think about their circumstances, the situations they face and what Paul has taught them. The important thing is that they enjoy and live in the peace of God.
And we all know that our lives involve a sufficient number of issues to depress the most positive person anywhere. Yet, Paul gives a prescription for maintaining joy and happiness despite the circumstances, the situations, and not clearly understanding his messages.
Think about the truth. Whatever is true can be claimed and proclaimed. Think about noble issues. Whatever is noble can be pursued and savored. Think about right and purity. Whatever is right and pure will never be punished. Think about the lovely (beautiful) and admirable. Whatever is lovely and admirable will make you smile and lift your spirits.
Is there anything excellent in your life? Is there anything that you can praise God for? Think about these things! Your life will be immeasurably better. The circumstances will not look so dim. The situation will take on a different light. Your understanding of Scripture will improve and not be so daunting.
Finally, think on these things.
Dear Father, thank you for sending Paul to the Gentiles. Empower us to enjoy the peace of God by thinking on the Word of God. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
