“But I am poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high. I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.” (Psalm 69:29-30 KJV)
When troubles surround us and relief isn’t on the horizon, there is only one place to go. When we are sinking in the mire of our circumstances and the waters of life are rising, there is a place we can go for relief. That is where David went . . .
“Save me O God” is his cry. This Psalm is an outpouring of David’s heart. He is has had all he can take. His troubles overflow and are spreading rather than receding. His burdens are heavy . . . more than he can bear. He needs relief and there is only one who can give it.
He pours his soul out before God and spreads out all his complaints on the Lord’s altar. Finally when he has exhausted his grievances, he acknowledges his unworthiness and asks for God’s salvation and deliverance (v. 29).
I don’t know about you, but sometimes the troubles of this life overwhelm me. And hearing the daily news makes me feel small and vulnerable. Anxiety and sorrow threaten to erase my peace of mind. And when I become weary with crying; when my throat is dry from constant prayer; and when my eyes are tired from waiting on the Lord; I refuse to give up and quit.
I choose to sing praises to God who will “set me on high.” I choose to sing the praises of our God. And I sing a song of increasing gratitude to him. You see, this pleases God more than any sacrifice I could ever make, because God hears the poor in spirit and does not despise those who trust in him (v. 33).
“Let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moveth therein” (v. 34).
Dear Father, we thank you for your unspeakable blessings. Embolden us with a song of praise and a spirit of gratitude. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be courageous today with your songs of praise,
