Considering Life

“Show me, Lord,
my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is.
You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing
before you. Everyone is but a breath even those who seem secure.” (Psalm 39:4-5
NIV)

To  my congregation last Sunday, I expressed how
that despite our desires to know our future, it is better that God not reveal
it to us. Consider that if God had told us fifty years ago what our lives would
be like today, we might not have wanted to walk this path.

Our children grow up
and we are so proud of them. We love them beyond words. We giggle at their
antics and their complaints because we remember that, at their age, we had the
same ones. Children grow up and parents grow older.

Age has a way of
forcing us to consider issues that heretofore were not issues. We may not yet
be senior citizens, but wrinkles and white hair do increase. Parts of the body
droop more or less as the years pass. WOW! This could be depressing . . . 🙂

We begin to feel
sorry for ourselves and we have to find a way out of self pity. Work more or
harder. Clean out the garage or that basement or office. Tackle that job we
have put off for so long. We’ll show that younger crowd that we are not as old
as they think.

Pursuing such a
project, we discover that it doesn’t get done as easily as in the past. We get
tired more quickly than in the past. We require more “coffee” breaks
than in the past. Our energy fails . . . too many years have past.

When we were younger
clean-up was a chore and not nearly as fascinating. Now it fascinates us that
we have worked so long and gotten so little done. In our youth we thought some
issues were silly, but now we wonder at how many issues still fascinate us.

Yes, we aren’t
youngsters anymore. And it is for that very reason we enjoy things youngsters
never can. When we discover this, we will learn to live everyday with gusto and
make it count for something important. Ah, yes growing up is so much fun, but
then so is growing older!

Dear Father, thank
you for the life and span of years you have given to us. No matter how secure
we may think we are, empower us to consider the fleeting vapor of our lives and
make it count for your glory. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN

Be strong and
courageous today as you consider your life,
