“A happy
heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.” Proverbs
15:13 (NIV)
It is
important to maintain a happy heart in the face of our circumstances. Any news
paper can produce enough heartache to crush every spirit. So, may I share a
smile with you, dear reader?

A young
boy told his father proudly, “I know what the Bible stands for!” His
father smiled and replied, “What do you mean, you ‘know’ what the Bible
stands for?” The son replied, “I do know!” “Okay,”
said his father. “What does the Bible stand for?” “That’s easy,
Daddy.” the boy replied, “It stands for ‘Basic Information Before Leaving
Earth.'”

A US
Agriculture inspector told the farmer he had to inspect his farm. “Alright,”
the farmer replied pointing to his nearest pasture, “but stay out of that
pasture.” The inspector bristled at that, flashed his I.D. card, and claimed he
could go anywhere he thought necessary. The farmer just shrugged and went to
the barn. About 20 minutes later, he heard somebody screaming and looked up to
see the inspector racing across that pasture with a bull chasing him. The
farmer yelled, “Show him your card! Show him your card!”

Of course,
a cheerful face can be a façade. But we all know that what’s on the inside will
flow to the outside. A happy heart will indeed make our faces cheerful, not
merely for a happy face but because the heart is truly happy despite
everything.

When
heartache comes happy hearts refuse to be crushed. When the face is in need, a
happy heart renews the spirit indeed!
