Telling the Lord’s Story

“The words of a
wise man’s mouth are gracious, But the lips of a fool shall swallow him up; The
words of his mouth begin with foolishness, And the end of his talk is raving
madness. A fool also multiplies words. No man knows what is to be; Who can tell
him what will be after him?” (Eccesiastes 10:12-14 NKJ)
Memories are
amazing! I have no idea how they are stored or retrieved, but I know they are
there. In a recent sermon, I began “strolling down memory lane” and
was pleasantly surprised at the number of people in the congregation who could
personally relate to what I described.
It’s lots of fun
strolling down memory lane, except when I remember embarrassing experiences,
such as long-winded descriptions of pie-in-the-sky nothings. William
Shakespeare wrote about such a person: “He draweth out the thread of his
verbosity finer than the staple of his argument.” Benjamin Disraeli said
such a person is, “Inebriated with the exuberance of his own verbosity,
and gifted with an egotistical imagination.” Memory lane can have its
potholes too!
Just today I was
remembering when I was a lot younger and thought of what life might be like, if
I had made different decisions back then. For instance if back then, I had
begun planning and organizing appropriately, what would life be like today?
What would I have achieved for the Lord? What would retirement look like?
Now don’t
misunderstand, I do not regret my life decisions. I am certain that I have
followed the Lord’s will. It is only that, in retrospect and hindsight’s
perspective, I can see where less talk and wiser planning would have made a
significant difference in my ministry and life.
Since only God knows
what the future holds, we should restrain foolish talk and the raving madness
that results. Only Scripture and the Holy Spirit gives us clues to the future.
Only God knows what will come after us. Perhaps what he says is what we should
talk about. What a novel thought!
Dear Father, thank
you for telling us your story. Empower us to talk less about ourselves and more
about your Story. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be strong and
courageous today telling the Lord’s story,
