“I waited patiently for the LORD; And He inclined to me, And heard my cry. He
also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet
upon a rock, And established my steps. He has put a new song in my
mouth– Praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, And will trust in
the LORD.” (Psalm 40:1-3 NKJ)
Waiting patiently is such a burden. Waiting is one thing, but doing it patiently
is entirely another issue. I want everything to fall into place smoothly and
without a hitch. When it doesn’t, then I tumble into a horrible pit.
is entirely another issue. I want everything to fall into place smoothly and
without a hitch. When it doesn’t, then I tumble into a horrible pit.
And the longer I wait, the deeper the pit seems to become. Its horror
deepens because the pit turns into miry clay that sucks me deeper into its
grasp. And my only salvation is when I remind myself that I am patiently
waiting on my God. I remind myself that he never fails nor forsakes. And I feel
the miry clay’s grip relax.

As I consider the situation, I begin praising God for past blessings of
deliverance. A new thought enters my mind. My impatient frustration at having
to wait has, in effect, created the pit and its miry clay. So, I encourage
myself by renewing my praises and a miracle begins to swirl around me.

My Lord and Savior begins listening to me. On his throne beside the Father,
he hears my cries for help, my praise and my thanksgiving. Suddenly, he is
present with me in the pit, but he isn’t being trapped by it. Instead, he is
lifting me up out of its miry grip.

Suddenly, I am standing on a rock. The pit is gone. No more sinking. Nor
more waiting. He comes to my rescue. He explains what I am to do. He establishes
my steps to the future. But most wonderful of all, the Lord puts a new song in
me. It begins like this, “Praise to our God.”

Like David in today’s Psalm, I too believe that many people will be
influenced by the telling of my story. I simply urge you to worship and trust
him who delivers from every pit.

Dear Father, thank you for your deliverance from every pit in this life.
Empower us to sing the new song of praise and wait patiently on you. I pray
this in the name of Jesus. AMEN
