“Then I
proclaimed a fast there at the river of Ahava, that we might humble ourselves
before our God, to seek from Him the right way for us and our little ones and
all our possessions.” (Ezra 8:21 NKJ)

Like everyone else I
like to win. No one enjoys losing. We all want to come in first place. Yet, age
and time take hold and we can’t quite do what we used to do. We watch sports
instead of playing them. We coach players or become commentators instead of playing
in the game.

and time take hold and we can’t quite do what we used to do. We watch sports

What once fueled our
spirit in the game becomes a fading memory. Our desire to win stumbles across
an invisible line between strength and weakness. Our choices have shaped our
lives and we are facing the results. Hopefully at this stage of life, our wins
still outweigh our losses and hope still wins over disappointment.

In his start here go anywhere, Richie Hughes writes,
“No matter where we begin, our decisions each day determine where we will
end up.” So many choices with such little time to decide. Even
insignificant decisions have profound consequences in our future.

Free will is a gift
from God so choices are not be taken lightly. Our decisions bring us closer to
God or carry us farther from him. Remember, decisions build on each other. Our
decisions literally construct our lives. They form the framework upon which we
hang our future. C. S. Lewis wrote that our “innumerable choices”
form our lives “into a heavenly creature or into a hellish creature.”

Our decisions
determine who we become. How enjoyable life would be if we understood this
principle and practiced it. Remember Habakkuk’s warning, “Behold the proud, His soul is not
upright in him; But the just shall live by his faith” (Habakkuk 2:4 NKJ).
Note also the Apostle’s words, “whatever a man sows, that he will also
reap” (Galatians 6:7 NKJ).

Our lives
malfunction and become hellish when our decisions proceed from questionable
choices. Our decisions reflect our values, so the best way to avoid bad
decisions is to allow our values to drive them. Surely a future in God is more
important than a future forged by my will and the world.

Dear Father, thank
you for the future you have in mind for me. Empower me to hope in that future
and make decisions today forged by your right way. I ask this in the name of
Jesus. AMEN
