Change

 “Search me, O
God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any
wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23-24
NKJ)
In the Bible there
are good examples of change. Abraham, who went not knowing where he was going.
Moses, who obeyed a voice from to a burning bush. David, who accepted a
challenge from a pagan warrior. Daniel, who prayed to God despite a king’s
prohibition. Peter, who got out of a boat in the middle of a lake to walk with
the Lord.
While we applaud
these men for taking the risks, most of us don’t like risk, change or turning
points in life. We want everything to remain “the same as always” or
let change be instant and painless. Fortunately or unfortunately, according to
one’s view, this is not reality.
For me as a
Christian, change demands that I trust the One who asks me to change. All of
the men listed above risked themselves. And all of them experienced some anxiety. In each of them, something changed (or
already had changed) in order for them to trust the one who directed them.
Despite the lack of details about the future, they had to confidently know that
a change would produce a better future than their present without change.
To be or not to be
is truly the question. My resistance to change is born in myself. Will I be
what God wants me to be or will I continue to be what I am? The difference is
change. A careful reading of Romans 8:26-30 always reminds me of God’s purpose
for changing me.
Change may seem
ridiculous to others. Noah’s neighbors probably thought he was crazy, but he
saved himself and his family. Change may require something distasteful. Jonah
was asked to warn Israel’s enemies of divine judgment, but a society of people
were saved.
I like what the Psalmist said, “Lead me in the way everlasting.” If the Lord is leading me in his everlasting way, then change is nothing to fear because he is going with me.
Dear Father, thank
you for the changes you have made in my life. Enable me to change according to
your will for me. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Ask the Lord what to
