“He who has
knowledge spares his words, And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.
Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; When he shuts his lips, he
is considered perceptive.” (Proverbs 17:27-28 NKJ)

Writers have
difficulty with this principle. Our nature is to give answers. We have a story
to tell and we want folks to hear it. We have knowledge and we don’t spare
words in sharing it. We are calm in our understanding but not in holding our
peace.

It is difficult for
us to perceive how silence enhances our perception. After all, how can
knowledge and wisdom be shared if we hold our peace? If the answer is known,
then what is the value of keeping your mouth shut?

Of course, the issue
is not about speaking or writing profusely. And it is not about teaching
others. Solomon’s wisdom is about the calm spirit. Wisdom is not seen in heated
passion, or tumultuous expression, or disorderly claims. Wisdom is evidenced by
a controlled spirit and tongue.

The wise are not
afraid of speaking. They are afraid of saying the wrong things. Wisdom is
expressed with purpose and quiet deliberation. It is more important to speak a
few well-chosen words that edify others than many words which have little
significance.

Wisdom is accessed
by assessing what more experienced speakers have to say. There is value in
carefully observing the points they make. The experienced gained from this
exercise will improve our ability to speak properly at the proper time. And
that is my goal: edify others by speaking proper words at the proper time.

Dear Father, thank
you for the wisdom of your Word. Empower us to listen and observe and gain
wisdom. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN
