the land of the living. Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall
strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD!” (Psalm 27:13-1 NKJ)

In The Shawshank Redemption character Andy
Dufresne says, “Get busy living, or get busy dying.” That is the crux
of existence. Living or dying. There is no middle road. It’s one or the other.

The dying is easy.
We can just give up and quit. Many people do every day, month and year. The
obstacles to “real” living are simply too enormous for some. Perhaps
they are expecting too much, too soon. Perhaps they can’t “see” the
mountain of joy on the other side of the obstacles. In any case, they decide,
“life is too hard so let the difficulties win.”

The living is not so
easy, but tremendously rewarding. The excitement of serving others. The
exhilaration of the sunrise. The blessing of new opportunities. The
satisfaction of meaningful moments that others cannot know. The joy of your
grandchildren’s smiles. The pleasure of knowing you are making a difference.
The thrill of God’s presence. This is living, real living. Not a fantasy that
leaves us empty and depressed. It is everyday, ordinary living where
difficulties thrive but are overcome gracefully.

We who are busy
living believe in the goodness of our great God. And we expect to see his
goodness here and now in the land of the living. Despite our difficulties.
Despite our hardships. Despite our frailties. Despite all that the world throws
at us. We believe in the goodness of God. Otherwise, we would have given up
too.

But instead, we
believe and wait on the Lord. We face each day — each trial — with courage.
And each day, for each trial, he gives us strength. His strength
encourages the heart. So, to all those who are not busy living we shout,
“Don’t give up! Wait on the Lord!”

Dear Father, thank
you for the strength you give to us each day. While we are busy living, empower
us with the courage to overcome all the difficulties. I pray this in the name
of Jesus. AMEN
