“I will lift up
my eyes to the hills– From whence comes my help? My help comes from the LORD,
Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who
keeps you will not slumber.” (Psalm 121:1-3 NKJ)

In all my 38 years
of pastoral ministry, there have been a few times when I am certain God spoke
to me. And in all those times, I had turned “my eyes to the hills” of
God and sought the sort of help that only “comes from the Lord.”

Interestingly, life
(and ministry) is unpredictable and issues arise which keeps us awake at night.
And dreading the worst or hoping for the best often depends on whether we are
truly trusting God for his help. But since he doesn’t sleep, he can deal with
things better than I can with a tired, sleepless disposition.

I confess that I do
not “have-it-all-together,” but that is precisely the issue. God
does! Placing my need, issue, or question in his hands means I am much more
inclined to hope than to dread. And if
he is going to stay up all night, why should I? He is better equipped for this
worry stuff than I am.

He has promised to
be my protector. He is my defense against the heat of life and the unknown
dangers. He preserves me against all physical and spiritual evil enemies. God
preserves me when I am traveling and when I am safe at home. He will never
leave me nor forsake me!

That is why I lift
up my eyes to the hills of the Lord. I do not believe in coincidence or
happenstance. The one who created heaven and earth orders my steps. And he does
not send me down slippery slopes. His trail is a solid path from here into
eternal salvation.

Dear Father, thank
you for your guidance. May your will be done here in me as it is done in
heaven. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN
