Listen

And a cloud came and
overshadowed them; and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My
beloved Son. Hear Him!” (Mark 9:7 NKJ)
The man didn’t
understand everything that he saw or the meaning of this new experience but
Jesus had invited him along and everyone paid attention. Along with James and
John, Peter was mesmerized by the light surrounding Jesus, Moses and Elijah.
The atmosphere was charged with fearful awe and excitement. This experience
made chills wash over his body.
For whatever reason,
Peter thought someone should say something, but he didn’t know what to say.
That should have been enough to keep quiet, but Peter didn’t. Since he was only
a guest at this event and not included in the conversation, Peter should have
kept his thoughts to himself, but he didn’t. He was there to listen and learn.
From the text, it
seems that he actually interrupted the conversation between Elijah, Moses and
the Lord. He blurted out, “let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one
for Moses, and one for Elijah ” (v.5). Despite his immature exuberance, God
graciously corrected him: “This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!” (v. 7).
Our world is full of
conflicting ideas, experiences and issues. They all scream for our allegiance.
Each one wants to be the major influence in our lives. And it is easy to get
caught up in contemporary issues that stir our emotions and may have worthy goals.
Like Peter, not knowing what to do, we may start in an improper direction. From
heaven, God spoke to Peter and told him to listen to his son, Jesus. This is
still good counsel even in the 21st century.
Dear Father, thank
you for your son, Jesus Christ. Empower us with the proper attitude to listen
to and obey him. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN
