Worship

“Praise the
LORD! Sing to the LORD a new song, And His praise in the assembly of saints.
Let Israel rejoice in their Maker; Let the children of Zion be joyful in their
King. Let them praise His name with the dance; Let them sing praises to Him
with the timbrel and harp. For the LORD takes pleasure in His people; He will
beautify the humble with salvation.” (Psalm 149:1-4 NKJ)
I enjoy visiting
different congregations of God’s people and learning new worship songs. They
can be so invigorating and motivating to my spirit. They energize me by
presenting new words, new melodies and new ways of expressing my joy to the
Lord.
Just as exciting is
the way a congregation sings in praise and worship to God. They will almost
always express their worship differently than I am use to at my home church.
Diversity of style and music and culture all come together in a congregation’s
expression of worship, but these elements are not the focus of the worshipper.
The Lord God is the
proper focus of every worshipper and every worshipping congregation. Worship:
gratitude for who he is; abandoning personal inhibitions and rejoicing in his
grace; letting the joy of being his children flood us; rejoicing in the excitement
of his blessings; praising his name in dance and bodily expression; and such
like.
Worship and praise
is indeed an activity of the spirit, but if the spirit is truly worshipping
then the body is involved with an outward expression of the inward joy.
Although worship can be said to be a personal and private issue, it is not
exclusive from a public expression. In fact, we are charged to “praise his
name in the congregation of saints” (i.e., public worship celebration).
The last two phrases
of today’s passage get me excited. “The Lord takes pleasure in his
people” and “he will beautify them with salvation.” These two
statements express the reason why my worship of God is so important: because
God loves it and blesses those who do it.
Dear Father, thank
you for clothing me in your salvation. Energize me to worship you in spirit and
in truth everyday. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Worship God today in
praise with new songs,
